Artistic Oblation Cakes
Have you ever wondered what these colorful rice cakes taste like that one can find on numerous offerings on the streets or at the shrines alongside Bali’s busy roads or if one can acctually eat them?
The cakes are made of rice flours and formed into flowers, figures or sacred weapons of the gods.
They are called “Calcalan” and are usually white, red from coloring substance or brown from the palm sugar.
Are they eatable? Yes, you can eat them but they don’t taste as sweet as they look and only the brown batter ones taste sweet. Others can have a rather salty flavour to them.
Now don’t go and try them because after all, they are meant as an expression of gratitude and love to the creator by the balinese people and they might not like the fact that you sample their offering!!
